Our Retaining Wall Work
Don't let your retaining wall become a dam. Northstead has the expertise and equipment to build any type of retaining wall - from natural stone to large concrete blocks. Our walls are built using pre-engineered blocks and designed to last. It's important to note that blocks are rated for specific heights; exceeding this rating can lead to instability.
Retaining walls alongside driveways can be tricky because of the added weight of vehicles. If the wall is above a driveway, it could be hit by plows or damaged from water runoff. It's usually best to have a buffer area between a driveway and the neighbouring wall to allow for drainage - the area can also be used to stage plants or shrubs.
In northern Ontario's harsh freeze-thaw cycles, using the proper blocks is essential. If clay is present, ridge foam insulation may be required to prevent frost heaving. Our walls include an extra-wide base and geogrid reinforcement every second course to tie the rows back into the existing slope. We also use geo-textile fabric in the sub-base to ensure minimal settling and maximum stability.
Backfilling is crucial - using a material that won't hold water is essential. Retaining walls that hold back water can fail due to the extra weight created by damming. Knowing whether you'll require drainage tile or an outdoor sump pit is key to a wall that lasts for decades.

Natural stone is a pricier option but a requirement when dealing with water. Nothing lasts longer in water than a piece of the Canadian Shield.
